When a canine has a rash or what appears to be hives, should we look for other symptoms before treating with a topical or Benadryl?

True hives are signs of an allergic reaction, most commonly to insect bites, vaccines or medications. Uncommonly they can be associated with food allergies or atopic dermatitis. If apparent “hives” persist for weeks, have your veterinarian evaluate your dog – they may not be hives. Some short-coated dogs have bacterial skin infections that can look like hives.
