Prednisone (as sole agent) dose for neoplasia

When clients refuse further diagnostics/care and all I can do for that presumptive neoplasia case is prednisone.... how much should I be giving?

    0.5 mg/kg? 1 mg/kg? 2 mg/kg?

Should I be dosing by body surface area instead (or does it not really matter for pred?)

And would you use a higher dose for cats than dogs?

    Thanks

    Steven,

I would use an anti-inflammatory dose that you are comforatable. I typically use 30 mg/m2 as my high dose, but there is no magic in that number.

My typical cat dose is 5 mg BID unless the cat is below 5 kg, in which case I use 5 mg once daily--and I always use prednisolone in cats.

Do you prefer once daily dosing or twice daily dosing, or does it not really matter?

    30 mg/m2 is approximately 1 mg/kg (correct me if I'm wrong). Would you prefer 1 mg/kg q24h in a lymphoma dog, or instead 0.5 mg/kg q12h?

    Steven,

For me, whether we use once or twice daily depends more on client preference, than on anything else. Both dosing regimens should work.
