Sedatives that May Precipitate Seizures

    Question submitted during Session IV of The Canine Epilepsy Summit:

    This question was asked in relation to the segment on end-of-life considerations and euthanasia:

    "In Field Spaniels we have seen Acepromazine trigger seizures. Do you recommend breed specific options (to use or avoid) for pre-euthanasia sedation?"

    - Answer provided by Dr. Kathleen Cooney:

    At this time, there is little to no research on breed-specific pre-euthanasia sedation protocols to prevent seizures. It’s reasonable for owners to share concerns with veterinary teams about drugs that have triggered seizures in the past. The vet can then adjust the protocol accordingly. In my experience, this has been the best approach.
