This question was submitted during the webinar titled: PU - What's That? Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis:

Is there any way to tell if a puppy will develop GRPU?

Dr. Wendy Townsend, DVM, MS, DACVO responded:

Most every Golden at 2 years of age or younger will have a completely normal exam in terms of findings that would be associated with GRPU.  That’s one of the big challenges with the disease - when they are young, everything will look very normal with no predictors of what will happen in the future. This is why very conscientious breeders who are doing their very best to breed the healthiest puppies possible can have PU pop up in their pedigrees. Your best bet to avoid problems is looking back in the pedigrees for a history of PU and uveal cysts.
