  • January 19, 2019 4:03 PM EST

    Updated 1/18/19:

The FDA's recommendation to pet owners who purchased A+ Answers Straight Beef Formula for Dogs - lot 2018 02/08 20 is to throw it away as testing by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture has revealed contamination with Salmonella. Containers, bowls, and any other items that may have come into contact with this food should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Feces of pets that consumed this food should be picked up and disposed of to avoid exposing other animals and humans to infection.

Salmonella can lead to severe illness in humans and animals. Affected animals may not show signs of infection however they can still be a source of infection to other animals and humans. Symptoms in sick animals include: vomiting, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, loss of appetite, and general malaise. Humans infected with Salmonella may develop a fever, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. In severe cases the infection can enter the bloodstream and affect other organs (even leading to death).
