Question submitted by the audience in our recent webinar: Understanding Steroid Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis and Other Inflammatory Neurological Disorders of Dogs:

As a breeder, how does one assess this issue in your breeding program? I've had one case, with no affected relatives in the pedigree. Do you believe it's genetic?

Answer by: Karen R. Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology):

SRMA is presumed to be heritable based on known breed predispositions, but to date a genetic basis for the disease has not been identified. Until the genetics of the disease are better understood, it is difficult to make recommendations on how best to select away from the development of SRMA.
