Urinary tract problems of dogs and cats are commonly seen in the general practice setting, and prescribing of antimicrobials is often a consideration for affected animals.
In spite of changes in recent years regarding guidelines and recommendations around the use of antibiotics, many veterinarians continue to prescribe in accordance with outdated information. In fact, there have been significant changes in the guidelines regarding prescribing of antimicrobials for the treatment of infections - all in an effort to reduce antimicrobial drug resistance.
In this presentation, Dr. Granick focuses on current recommendations regarding bacterial urinary tract disease and her discussion includes:
- Manifestations of bacterial urinary tract disease including sporadic bacterial cystitis, subclinical bacteriuria, recurrent bacterial cystitis / infections, pyelonephritis, and prostatitis
- Diagnostic testing and treatment
- Best practices for choosing antibiotics empirically and based on culture and sensitivity
- Algorithms for diagnosing and treating urinary tract disease in dogs and cats.
This presentation meets requirements for antimicrobial stewardship / prescribing continued education for veterinary professionals.
