Dental procedures are commonly performed in the companion animal practice setting and, in recent years, we've seen a growing body of evidence pointing to the inappropriate use of antibiotics in many of these patients. While the data reveals that antibiotics are overused, there are currently no standard guidelines regarding antimicrobial prophylaxis in veterinary dentistry. This begs the question ..."when are antibiotics actually indicated in veterinary dentistry?"

In this presentation, Dr. Goldschmidt begins by discussing the health concerns related to antibiotic misuse and overuse, and why judicious use of antibiotics is essential to both animal and human health. The focus then turns to veterinary dental and oral surgery procedures and the likelihood of associated local and/or systemic bacterial infections, when the use of prophylactic antibiotics is warranted during dental procedures and in management of chronic oral conditions, as well as considerations regarding drug selection and prescribing.
