Mast cell tumors are the most common skin cancer in dogs. While surgical removal is part of the standard of care for treating patients with mast cell tumor(s), there are instances in which surgery is not a viable option - a client may decline the recommendation, a patient may not be a suitable candidate for anesthesia, or the anatomic location of the tumor(s) is challenging to reconstruct (e.g., around the rectum, genitalia, face, feet, etc.).

In this segment (which originally aired as part of Session III of the Pet Cancer Summit), we learn about two non-surgical alternatives for treating gross disease in the primary veterinary care setting including:

  • Stelfonta® - an innovative and effective treatment option for dogs with cutaneous and subcutaneous mast cell tumors that is administered intratumorally and leads to tumor necrosis and sloughing

  • Gold Nanoparticles - are administered intravenously and combined with targeted, non-ablative laser therapy to thermally damage cancer cells and their blood supply
