Maxillofacial trauma in small animals commonly and typically arises because of road traffic accidents, fighting, or abuse. In some parts of the world, gunshot wounds involving the head are also seen with some frequency. Managing maxillofacial trauma is not straightforward. One must have an understanding of the maxillofacial region as well as the appropriate steps to ensure patient safety, successful management, and optimize outcomes. Diagnostic imaging is a cornerstone to appropriately evaluating the type and extent of the trauma.

This presentation will describe common maxillofacial trauma scenarios and treatment modalities (medical and surgical) that most can perform in general clinical practice. Selected scenarios will also be described that may warrant referral to a specialty practice.
