Question submitted during Session II of The Canine Epilepsy Summit:

"Are there any medications that you would absolutely not recommend getting compounded due to concerns about efficacy? For example, getting zonisamide compounded into a liquid for a 2kg chihuahua ...?"

    - Answer provided by a Session II Panelist:

It is important to work with a veterinarian to be sure that you have a good reason to use a compouded forumation of a drug. Ideally we try to use compounded products that have been shown to be effective in the literature.

In addition to the type of medications being compounded, it is very important to look at the facility doing the compounding. Specifically, looking for a pharmacy that has 503B licensure status, no FDA warning letters, licensed in your state, Pharmacy Compounding Accredidation Board (PCAB) accredited, and carries a .pharmacy domain (if they are online).
