This question was submitted during the webinar titled: PU - What's That? Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis:
If a Golden Retriever has multiple cysts, how often should a UBM be done versus just an exam? This dog in particular is now 11 yrs old, with a family history of PU.
Dr. Wendy Townsend, DVM, MS, DACVO responded:
I tend to use the UBM exam more as a research tool to give me more information about what’s happening in the eye and to more fully document findings for the genetic studies. Once we can see multiple cysts clinically, we know that we will see multiple cysts on UBM. IF the pupil is not dilating well due to synechia (adhesions) from the cysts, then the UBM becomes useful. Otherwise, I do not typically use UBM as a tool to manage PU itself - again, I predominantly use UBM as a research tool.
