Question submitted by the audience in our recent webinar: Understanding Steroid Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis and Other Inflammatory Neurological Disorders of Dogs:

Does C reactive protein help to distinguish SRMA from discospondylitis?

Answer by: Karen R. Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology):

C reactive protein is elevated in SRMA, but can also be elevated in discospondylitis. Other tests would be more helpful in distinguishing between the 2 disorders; radiographs are useful in diagnosing diskospondylitis, but are normal in SRMA. In addition, the marked CSF inflammation seen with SRMA is not typical of diskospondylitis.
