Icterus (or jaundice) is a clinical sign characterized by a yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes and sclera due to an increased concentration of bilirubin in a patient's serum and tissues. Affected animals often have other clinical signs or symptoms of illness including lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, and weight loss. Icterus is not a disease, rather it is an indicator of another underlying problem - most commonly either hepatobiliary disease or hemolysis.

In this live and interactive webinar, we will discuss the the rational approach to evaluating icterus in cats including:

  • Differentiating pre-hepatic, hepatic, and post-hepatic icterus and the cholestasis of sepsis
  • The most common causes of icterus in the cat including cholangitis / cholecystitis, feline hepatic lipidosis, feline infectious peritonitis, lymphoma and pancreatitis
  • A diagnostic algorithm for arriving at these diagnoses based on clues from the history, clinical signs, physical examination, clinical pathology and abdominal ultrasound
  • Tips for choosing the most appropriate diagnostic test(s) for the most common causes of hyperbilirubinemia in the cat
