Chronic Kidney Disease In Cats - Phosphate Binders

Feline Medicine

This question was submitted in a past webinar on the topic of chronic kidney disease in cats (a nutritionist's perspective):

Question:
Do you recommend Epakitin Powder for phosphate binding?

Answer by Donna Raditic, DVM, DACVN, CVA:

Below is some information from Dr. Joe Bartges who is a nutritionist and internist with sub-specialty in urology / nephrology. He has Epakitin listed as a phosphate binder, but it is not one he routinely uses because of concerns with calcium ... i.e. feline idiopathic hypercalcemia.

Phosphate binders:

    • Aluminum hydroxide: 60-90 mg/kg divided

    • Lanthanum: 30-50 mg/kg divided

    • Ca acetate: 20-40 mg/kg/meal

    • Sevelamer

    • Epakitin
