Veterinary school and veterinary technician training programs focus on preparing future professionals on how to treat and care for patients in the clinical setting. As such, these (and other allied pet care professionals) rarely enter their respective professions truly equipped to treat the hundreds of patients they will eventually encounter that live in a hazardous environment as a result of hoarding.
Animal hoarding is a deeply complex condition involving both human psychological factors and animal welfare, and is also one of the clearest examples of the human-animal bond going wrong: care that causes harm.
In this live and interactive webinar we will learn about the real-world conditions and operational tactics of animal hoarding cases from Dr. Sandra Strong - an AVMA board-certified animal welfare veterinarian with nearly three decades of experience supporting animal welfare and the human–animal bond. This session will provide a fascinating and empathetic look at this complex condition including how to:
- Identify the three main typologies of animal hoarders (Overwhelmed Caregiver, Rescuer, and Exploiter) and the opportunity to customize intervention strategies to influence case outcomes
- Apply the Five Domains Model of Animal Welfare to evaluate nutrition, environment, health, behavior, and mental state, and to determine both physical suffering and behavioral restrictions in hoarded animals
- Identify clinical "red flags" and owner-profile warning signs to catch early-stage neglect and prevent escalation of animal hoarding behavior
- Report suspected cases through an understanding of a multi-agency, collaborative intervention plan, using case knowledge to coordinate with Animal Control, Adult Protective Services (APS), and mental health crisis counselors
- Evaluate the clinical advantages and operational disadvantages of prosecution versus managed intervention in minimizing recidivism and establishing long-term compliance
