How goes the research to identify the genomic loci associated with PU?
Dr. Wendy Townsend, DVM, MS, DACVO responded:
So far we have not been able to identify a single locus associated with PU. This finding, in combination with the heritability studies, is the reason we believe the condition is polygenic. Therefore the new studies underway are looking at similarities in genetics between severely affected dogs to identify genomic loci as those dogs in a polygenic condition should be expressing all of the mutations associated with the condition. We will then take that information to build a risk score for the disease as we work to identify the specific loci involved in the disease.
