Urination And Defecation - A Sign Of Extreme Fear

Behavior

This was a follow up comment from an attendee of a webinar we hosted titled "Medical Problems That Look Like Behavior Problems":

Comment:
I appreciate it being noted that when an animal defecates or urinates - during exams - it's an indication of extreme fear. I think many vet clinics "get used" to it, and fail to acknowledge how terrified the animal is, and are not proactive enough in addressing it - either with training or medication.

Response by E'Lise Christensen, DVM, DACVB:
I totally agree. I encourage everyone who is frustrated with this to contact his/her closest veterinary school and all of the vet tech schools they know. Believe it or not, changes are happening, but they are slow in coming. Thankfully, Sophia Yin's work lives on in her great educational materials. I encourage EVERYONE interested in animal behavior and health to take her courses on Low Stress Handling and Restraint.
