Treating Yeast Infections In Ears

Question:
You talked about the dog, “Mama Boss” – why did you choose to use compounded clotrimazole / dexamethasone instead of something like Tresaderm? Isn’t Tresaderm effective against yeast?
Answer by Jason Pieper, DVM, MS, DACVD:
For Mama Boss, I wanted to make sure I had enough volume of the ear medication to get all the way down the ear canal, so 1 mL into each ear in that case.
Tresaderm would work as long as it is kept in the fridge to prevent breakdown of the thiabendazole. But I haven’t seen great success with Tresaderm in yeast cases that have been referred to me. Also, the volume needed would require us to go through several bottles - which could be cost prohibitive. I am not saying it wouldn’t work, but I also haven’t had a lot of first-hand experience using that for treating Malassezia otitis externa.
