Recurrent Hot Spots

Dermatology

This question was submitted during a past webinar titled The Itchy Dog:

Question:
I have a Golden Retriever who is 6.5 years old. This summer he has developed several hot spots for the first time ever. He has never had them before. His coat care is the same - I have not added anything new to his diet nor have I changed laundry soap or his bathing routine. His activities are the same. I cannot figure out why this is starting to happen now. Any insights?

Hot spots are acute, focal areas of skin irritation and infection that develop very rapidly. They invariably occur in dogs that have allergies. Hot spots over the rump are often associated with flea allergy, and hot spots that develop on the cheek or neck are usually associated with atopic dermatitis or food allergy. To prevent them from recurring, I recommend working with your veterinarian who will want to consider treatments for controlling the underlying allergies.
