Rectal Administration Of Diazepam For Seizure Emergencies

Neurology

This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of Canine Epilepsy:

Question:
We just got a prescription of Diazepam for rectal administration, in case our Husky has another seizure - he started to come out of seizure than started another last two seizures. He has had 17 seizures, 2-7 months apart - no seizure meds. Should we apply Diezapam immediately? It seemed like this may take a minute or so to take affect vs that nasal drug suggested?

Answer provided by a subject matter expert panelist:
Yes, you may apply diazepam imediately when you observe a seizure at home. The time to effect can be variable among dogs but, in general, evidence show that intranasal midazolam might be quicker and/or more effective in ceasing the seizure.
