Pyoderma - Determining Treatment Success

Performing cytology is essential for diagnosing pyoderma. Seeing evidence of bacteria and inflammatory cells on cytology can help to differentiate pyoderma cases from other skin conditions (whose lesions can mimic those seen with pyoderma). Common sampling techniques include impression smears for moist or exudative lesions, tape preparations for dry or crusty areas, and cotton-tipped applicators for hard-to-reach sites such as facial folds or interdigital spaces.
Cytology not only helps confirm the initial diagnosis but should also be repeated during rechecks (before the course of therapy is completed) to ensure complete resolution of infection, as stopping treatment too early may lead to recurrence. Dr. Jason Pieper, a veterinary dermatologist, explains:
