Question: Is there an issue with not having resistance to forward pushing and the leg just being moved backward in programming normal gaiting patterns?

In my experience, I have acutally treaded some dogs backwards in short intervals of time not only for proprioception, but also for strengthening of the hamstrings, or for them to do an active stretch.

I would concur with that comment. You just need to be creative, and using this tool to tread the patient backwards can add much more to your treatment.
