Mitral Valve Disease In Dogs

Cardiology

Degenerative mitral valve disease (MVD) - often referred to as myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) - is the most common form of heart disease diagnosed in dogs. Although dogs may live comfortably with the disease, many die due to complications associated with disease progression including congestive heart failure.

We teamed up with veterinary cardiology experts from the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine and presented a 3 part series on mitral valve disease in dogs. Learn about the most up to date information on how to manage these patients medically as well as newer interventions to keep these dogs living their best lives. From early detection to advanced treatment strategies, this comprehensive program highlights our current understanding of mitral valve disease in dogs including diagnostics, management strategies, as well as cutting-edge treatment options!

Program includes:

Session I:  Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease in Dogs - Diagnosis and Staging

In this first session we review the common physical examination findings  in affected dogs, the current classification and staging of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), as well as diagnostic testing including:

  • The use of the vertebral heart score (VHS) and vertebral left atrial score (VLAS) to stage MVD and predict disease progression.

  • The utility of cardiac biomarkers and echocardiogram findings to enhance clinical decision-making.

Session II: Managing Dogs with Mitral Valve Disease

In this segment, we learn about current evidence-based treatment strategies for each of the stages of heart disease as well as considerations for patients when standard therapies fail.

Session III: Beyond Medication - Interventional and Surgical Options for Managing Dogs with Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease

In this final session we learn about cutting edge, non-medical options for treating degenerative mitral valve disease in dogs including:

  • Interventional therapies such as left atrial decompression (LAD) and transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEEL) and factors that influence patient selection for these procedures.

  • Open-heart surgery and patient selection for open-heart mitral valve repair.
