Levetiracetam - Can It Increase Risk Of Seizures?

Neurology

This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of Canine Epilepsy:

Question: After starting Levetiracetam my patient's seizures increased. Is that a possible side effect of this medication?

Answer byKaren R. Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)

There are reports of humans experiencing an increase in seizure frequency while being treated with levetiracetam, but these were not controlled studies so it is not possible to say with certainty that a causal association exists. Other factors can influence seizure frequency over a period of time, and fluctuations in seizure frequency can just be a reflection of the natural waxing and waning course of disease.
