Keppra As An Emergency Antiseizure Drug

Neurology

Questions submitted during a past webinar on the topic of Canine Epilepsy:

Questions:
My dog is already on Keppra. Does it make sense to give more of it as an emergency med?

For dogs that are already on Levetiracetam (Keppra) and have clusters at home, should we give an additional dose of their usual Keppra during the cluster?"

Answer provided by a subject matter expert panelist:
Tolerance to Keppra's efficacy can be developed with long-term treatment, this is why we prefer to give it as a pulse therapy. If you already give it long-term, then yes you can give higher doses up to 60 mg/kg every 6-8 hours if needed (severe sedation and ataxia might occur).
