KBr (Bromide) Monitoring In Dog With Epilepsy

Neurology

This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of Canine Epilepsy:

Question:
"When should one start checking the KBr level after adding it to (the treatment of) a pet when phenobarbital was not controlling seizures.?

Answer provided by a subject matter expert panelist:

We recommend measuring bromide levels at 3-4 months after starting the medication, or any dosage adjustment. If seizures are frequent, we might also check the level at 1 month after initiating or adjusting the medication. And then levels should be checked on an annual basis.
