Hemangiosarcoma And IMHA

Internal Medicine

This question was asked during Session 1 of the Mastering IMHA program:

Question:
You mentioned hemangiosarcoma (cancer as an inciting cause of IMHA) which may include splenectomy if it's splenic hemangiosarcoma. So I was wondering how no spleen affects the calculus in IMHA?

Answer provided by John Loftus, PhD, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM, Nutrition):
Ah, we’ll touch on that next week in Session 2. :)
Splenectomy can also be a consideration for refractory IMHA cases, as that is a site of red cell destruction.
