Feline Chronic Stomatitis And Full Mouth Extractions

Dentistry

This question was submitted related to the webinar titled Spotlight on Feline Chronic Stomatitis - Current Concepts and Future Directions:

Question:
Is there evidence that shows a long duration of Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) before performing full-mouth extractions negatively affects post-extraction outcomes?

Answer
provided by Boaz Arzi, DVM, DAVDC, DEVDC, FF-AVDC-OMFS:

The only study we identified that modeled predictors after extractions (retrospective case series, n=111) reported that a longer interval between diagnosis and extraction was not significantly associated with worse post-extraction outcome on logistic regression.

The same 111-cat case series reported no significant association between corticosteroid use and post-extraction outcome; however, steroid exposure in that cohort was at anti-inflammatory doses, so effects of higher, immunosuppressive dosing were not assessable.
