This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of epilepsy:
Question:
Is it typical for a dog to be completely normal its first three years of life and then acquire epilepsy? What in their development or growth may cause such a change to happen?
Answer by Karen R. Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)
The onset of idiopathic epilepsy in dogs is typically between 6 months and 6 years of age. A dog affected with idiopathic epilepsy is born with the genetic makeup that makes it predisposed to seizures, but it is not understood what triggers the onset of seizures several years after birth.
