This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of Canine Epilepsy:
Question:
Is it less important to dose phenobarbital exactly on time because of its half life? What about zonisamide?
Answer provided by Dr. Karen Muñana:
This varies tremendously from dog to dog. Some dogs are very sensitive to the timing of their medications, while others can tolerate more variability. In general, it is more important for medications with a short half life to be given on a very strict schedule. Of the drugs that are commonly used in dogs, levetiracetam has the shortest half life and bromide has the longest.
