Dealing With Dogs That Bark Excessively

Behavior

Barking is a species typical behavior - it's normal for a dog to bark, but humans can find it bothersome. Some dogs learn to bark for attention and others bark in response to triggers in their environment.

Back in 2015, Dr. E'Lise Christensen - a veterinary behaviorist - provided insight on this behavior in dogs and offered suggestions on how to modify the behavior of excessive barking in dogs including:

  • How to deal with attention seeking barking
  • How to deal with dogs that bark excessively out of doors or at passersby
  • How to ensure that the animal's general species-specific needs are met (as this can help to minimize the undesired behavior)
  • Why aversives - including shock or citronella collars - are not recommended for trying to modify this behavior in dogs
