Could My Dog Be Allergic To My Cat?

Dermatology

This question was submitted by an audience member in a past webinar titled The Itchy Dog:

Question:

I have a Brussels Griffon, unspayed female, age 8 years. If she's awake, she's itching and quickly flipping her head toward her rear or digging at her neck. This has been getting progressively worse over the past year since we adopted our cat. Could she be allergic to the cat?!

Answer by Andrew Hillier, BVSc, MANZCVS, DACVD
Dogs do develop allergic reactions to cats, and vice versa for that matter. Your dog may be allergic to the cat but even if the cat were removed (and I am not advocating that!) then you may see very little - if any - difference, as most dogs are allergic to multiple allergens (dust mites, pollens, etc.) and removal of one usually makes little difference. Your veterinarian can help you devise a thorough plan to determine what may be causing your dog’s itching and then present a therapeutic plan specifically tailored to your dog.
