In this second session of a 4-part series on the topic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dogs, you will hear from veterinary specialists and experts on the multimodal approach to caring for dogs with CKD. We review the evidence available for commonly recommended treatments such as kidney diets and fluid therapy while also discussing practical tips for implementing these in a wide variety of cases including those where there might be some barrier to easily starting them. The discussion also includes other potential treatment targets based on the current and emerging evidence of potential risk factors for progression of disease as well as how to balance all of the different potential treatments in a practical manner.
Discussion includes:
- The role of nutrition including diet manipulation (what and when) and the importance of meeting caloric requirements
- The role of fluid therapy and how to meet patient needs
- Other primary targets including phosphorus, acidosis, electrolyte imbalances, uremic toxins, anemia, and blood pressure
Running time: 1 hr 24 mins (including 22 mins of question / answer)
Approved for 1.5 hrs of CE credit by AAVSB RACE and NY State
