Tip Of The Iceberg: Dog Bite Wounds

Emergency & Critical Care

Contributed by Melissa Holahan, DVM, DACVECC

This is "Lola" - she's an adorable 10 week old French Bulldog puppy that had an unfortunate meeting with a Pit Bull. Your classic BDLD (big dog little dog) encounter.

She's a perfect example of why patients with bite wounds over the thorax or abdomen should always be explored (after initial stabilization of course).

This puppy had two small puncture wounds over the right lateral thorax. Both wounds were found, on exploration, to be penetrating into the chest cavity. In addition, the right caudal lung lobe was completely macerated requiring a complete lung lobectomy. She is recoverying well today after surgery.
