Question:
How can we hold employees who break equipment financially responsible?
Answer by Sandy Walsh, RVT, CVPM:
Although there appears to be no real legitimate way to make the offender pay for the damage, it brought another solution to my mind as far as prevention. How many employees actually realize how expensive some of these items are? I would say very few. For some reason, we tend to keep this important financial information a secret. We all know the value of "open book management". Well, this is just another aspect of that.
When I am working with a team to begin the process of sharing and understanding the financial side of veterinary medicine, this is a piece I share. The best way to educate the team as to the cost to purchase, maintain and repair your equipment and instruments is to share the information. Show them the invoices! This way they see the number in black and white. Your employees might just be a little more careful with that piece of dental equipment, monitoring device, infusion pump etc. if they have a better understanding of the costs involved.
