Cornea - Topical Lidocaine Use

Ophthalmology

This question was submitted during a past webinar on the topic of Equine Ocular Emergencies ...

Question:
Is it acceptable to use topical lidocaine on a cornea?

Answer provided by Brad Holmberg, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVO:
Yes, 2% lidocaine topically is safe and effective allowing decreased corneal sensation for about 45 minutes after application versus 35 minutes for proparacine. A nice review of this is in AJVR by Pucket et al: Comparison of efficacy and duration of effect on corneal sensitivity among anesthetic agents.

Comment by Sheri L. Berger, DVM, DACVO:
I'd like to emphasize that topical anesthetic application should be solely for diagnostic purposes or to faciliate examination or procedures. It should not be incorporated into your treatment plan for managing a painful eye.
