Administration of Insulin in Diabetic Cats With Ketoacidosis

CE Event Information

  • Description:
Treatment of diabetic patients that present with ketoacidosis includes correcting fluid deficits and electrolyte imbalances, as well as the administration of insulin. There are various types of insulin available and different protocols to consider when treating patients.  Possible routes of administration include continuous rate infusion (IV), and/or by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.

In this Evidence Based Update, an alternative protocol for insulin administration is described - specifically one that calls for the subcutaneous and intramuscular administration of insulin - and its efficacy is compared to administration of insulin by an intravenous continuous rate infusion.

    Running time: 10 mins
