Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Cats - Risk Factors and Outcome Predictors

CE Event Information

  • Description:
Diabetes mellitus is a condition that is commonly diagnosed in dogs and cats. One of the severe complications of this condition is ketoacidosis - characterized by a state of metabolic acidosis and ketonuria and/or ketonemia. Although practitioners commonly see diabetic ketoacidosis, little has been known about risk factors for this complication and outcome predictors in affected cats.

In this Evidence Based Update, there is discussion about:
    - Criteria for diagnosing DKA
    - Common signalment of cats with DKA
    - Cat breeds at a higher risk for developing diabetes mellitus and DKA
    - Common presenting signs of illness
    - Clinicopathologic findings associated with a poorer prognosis
    - Insulin regimens and influence on patient outcome
    - Prognosis for cats with DKA

    Running time: 15 mins
