Brief Bio (include professional interests, hobbies, etc.):
I hail originally from West (by-God-stand-up-and-shout-it) Virginia and am a graduate of Marshall University (We are - Marshall). I received my DVM from the University of Georgia in 1987 (Go Dawgs - woof, woof). After completing a 1 year internship in small animal at the University of Minnesota, I completed residencies in medicine and nutrition and a PhD from Minnesota in 1993. I was on faculty at the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at The University of Tennessee in 1997. Currently, I am Professor of Medicine and Nutrition and hold the Acree Endowed Chair of Small Animal Research. I am board certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
I have spoken at more than 200 meetings, and published more than 225 peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, scientific abstracts, and textbook chapters. I am a co-editor of the textbook, Nephrology and Urology of Small Animals. I am also a member of the editorial boards of 5 veterinary journals. My research interests include urinary tract diseases, specifically urolithiasis, renal failure, hypertension, bacterial urinary tract infections, neoplasia, and feline idiopathic cystitis, and nutrition, specifically the role of nutrition in management and prevention of disease, obesity, and diabetes. In our academic referral practice, I do internal medicine primarily with a focus on urinary tract diseases including minimally invasive procedures such as laser lithotripsy, urethral bulking, and stent placement.
I have 3 children: Patrice, Garrick, and a Boxer, Buddy!
