This question was asked by a participant in our recent webinar on Separation Anxiety:

Q: What if the departure cue is the owner waking up and getting out of bed? The only thing that has helped thus far has been high dosage of Xanax 2 hours before waking up.

This is a great time to consider consistent dosing of the alprazolam (like BID, PLUS additional dose 2 hrs before owner wakes), switching the trigger time med to something longer lasting (clonazepam or even trazodone), AND/OR assessing the dose/drug of the maintenance medication.

The dog was on a twice daily dosage of alprazolam but only .5 mg. (1mg/day). 2mg seems to do the trick.  dog is also on fluoxetine, amitriptyline, gabapentin and buspirone was added about 6 weeks ago but no apparent effects.

Whoo!  That is quite the protocol!
